🖼️ Dimensions: Paint: 46 x 37 cm | Frame: 66 x 49.5 cm
🖼️ Who was the painter, Marcel Hué?
Marcel Georges Hué was born in Brittany in 1907.
He paints landscapes of his region, and especially maritime scenes (life of the port, boats, fishing ...).
Several of his paintings have already been sold at auction, in France and England, notably by the prestigious Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers or at Bamfords in Derby.
🖼️ Historical context of the painting "The Drakkars":
Of Breton origin, it can be assumed that the history of his region was of great interest to Marcel Hué, to the point that he wished to represent the arrival of the Viking fleet which took place around 880 in Saint-Gildas. After many years of looting, Brittany became a Scandinavian principality in 921.
In addition to these historical events, this superb painting exalts the Breton identity: beyond archaeological remains, the Vikings transmitted their genes to us, also becoming our ancestors.
🖼️ Table Description:
The painting depicts several drakkars heading towards the observer. The faces of the sailors seem hostile and the row of shields, which lines the side of the boat, suggests a fight. The perspective shows a sail in the background, meaning that the Vikings arrive in numbers.
For this painting, Marcel Hué chose oceanic colors, ranging from beige to blue-green. The whiteness of the foam and clouds adds a particular relief to certain areas of the painting.
The artist's signature is at the bottom right, with the date "1946".
The oil on wood is sold with its pretty old wooden frame: it has a frame covered with unbleached fabric with a golden rim that highlights the paint.
On the back, the frame includes a dedication: "1947 – To René MORLEC – M. Hué – Self-taught painter – Colleague of Bureau Mat & Trachon SNCF at 44 rue de Rome in Paris".
The oil attachment to the chassis has been properly reinforced by glued strips of kraft paper.
🖼️ Paint and frame condition:
Regarding the painting, it should be noted some small accidents at the bottom right and left (scales of 3 mm maximum) visible on the photos.
The wooden frame is in very good condition. However, due to its age, it has small scratches and discreet traces of wear.
🖼️ Careful packaging
