The Mobile Bay Middle Lighthouse, located in Mobile Bay, began operations on December 1, 1885, and Mobilians could observe a white light with red flashes every 30 seconds out in the bay.
The facility was built on an iron undergirding, and both the tower and the hexagonal keeper's house it supported were patterned after lighthouses operating in Chesapeake Bay. The Mobile Bay Middle light used a Fourth Order lens. When the bay was covered in fog a bell sounded every five seconds as a fog signal. The lighthouse was automated in 1935 and deactivated in 1967.
After decades of neglect, the lighthouse underwent almost $350,000 in renovations under the guidance of the Alabama Historical Commission. The original iron tower and light were replaced with a modest pole topped by a solar-powered red light.
An interesting fun fact....During World War I, the keeper responsible for the lights and his wife had a baby at the lighthouse. When the mother was unable to nurse the infant, the couple’s creativity was put to the test. Rather than send the mother and child ashore, a small corral was created on the lighthouse’s gallery, and a milk cow was transported to the station.
The lighthouse isn't visible from land but several boat tour companies offer rides out in Mobile Bay to get an upclose look at Middle Bay Lighthouse. Because the weather along the Gulf Coast can be very unpredictable, it took me booking 3 boat tours before I got good enough weather and calm seas to photograph the lighthouse.

They look best matted and framed which can be purchased separately. I recommend Hobby Lobby or Michael's.
2) Ready to Hang Canvas Prints are ready to hang right out of the box with a simple nail in the wall. Canvas is stretched over .75 inch thick wooden stretcher-bars that give it shape. There are no staples visible on the sides
Estimated delivery time for printing, assembling, packing and shipping is around 10 days.
3) Ready to Hang Canvas (split into 3 panels) Please contact me if interested in purchasing larger sizes in 3 panel splits for pricing. Most landscapes work well in a 3 panel split.
This is for larger pieces, and the photograph is split into 3 even separate canvas panels which when hung together make a single large image.
This allows spectacularly large sizes on your wall! Some photographs may not work well with 3 panels, depending on how the subject is placed in the photograph.
