Make your own furniture with a Hairpin leg set. Each leg is professionally fabricated, in house, at our Philadelphia location. Please choose your size and color from the following finishes, raw steel, satin black or satin white. One set of legs can hold roughly 400 lbs.
We have 3 finishes, raw steel, black and white. The raw steel goes through a cleaning bath with an anti rust solution vs the black and white are painted with a low voc, ultra durable exterior paint. The paint we use is extremely hard and resists abrasions, oils, is cleanable and can be use outdoors. This paint does rival powder coat and is more then suitable for furniture. As opposed to powder coat, you can use these outside. However, we cannot guarantee the finish during shipping, unfortunately. 95% of orders get to their location without damage. Due to this, we charge the bare minimum, basically just for the paint, and our labor is essentially free. In return, we can’t be held responsible for chipping during shipment. Please contact us for custom colors.
Unlike many shops who have their legs made in China, we hand make our legs in downtown Philadelphia continuing a long tradition of furniture manufacturing in Philadelphia. This allows us to have total control of quality. We use only tried and true methods for each of our processes. Some hairpin leg suppliers plug weld, spot weld, etc from the back to hide the welding. They claim it to be more technical or specialized however, it is an inferior way to weld. legs produced this way can be broken off by hand and are prone to moisture buildup within the weld. Our legs are generously welded around the entire bar creating the strongest weld possible. While our method of welding takes a little longer, it is the most beneficial way to produce the strongest hairpin. We make legs for a lifetime or more and they are truly a heirloom product.
We have designed our legs based off of the many different legs we have seen over the years in various thrift shops and antique stores. We are the only company that offers two screw holes for each weld. This a huge step up from the original style legs and makes for a more stable leg. As many of you may know, the hairpin leg was created by Henry Glass. The original design was patio furniture with hairpins for the legs, arms and back with fabric stretched for the seat and back. The metal was a special magnesium steel made to withstand salt water climates for coastal customers in NJ, NY and CT. As time progressed, the leg's type of steel changed to carbon steel and was sold as a detachable leg by various companies; each company having a similar design as Henry Glass never patented his designs.
About sizing: Please feel free to contact us with any questions as we are here to help. Please send us any questions about sizing prior to ordering. The general rule is seats and coffee tables are 18 inches tall, sitting tables are 30 inches tall and side tables are a wide range from 20 to 24 inches tall. The way you would figure your sizing needs is to take the height you need your table to be and subtract the thickness of your top. So if you need a table that is 30 inches high and your top is two inches thick, you would need 28 inch legs. Philly fabrication cannot make exchanges on wrong sizing.
Finishing: the 1st step to any painting is a rough sanding with 100 to 200 grit sand paper, then it is cleaned with hot soapy water and dried. The sanding takes off our sealer. Typically, a spray paint can be applied with good results. If you need something more robust, google articles on painting steel for your application.
Shipping Address: Please check your address as sometimes Etsy will save old addresses. Philly fabrication cannot be held responsible for items shipped to incorrect addresses. We cannot send to po boxes and cannot be held responsible if we accidently send out packages with a po box address. They will not be delivered and you may incur an additional charge. Please contact us before ordering when shipping outside the contiguous US.
This is a 100% mild steel product. There can be light blemishes due to the manufacturing process from the mill. It is susceptible to rust if it is not sealed or protected. Our sealer works well but Philly Fabrication cannot be held responsible for rust 10 days after receiving. Thanks
