A reminder of how far we've come!

In the early 1900s when women began to demand the vote, a huge backlash created a lot of nasty propaganda imagery. These tended to focus on how gaining the vote could lead infantile, unreasonable women to make bad decisions for the country, as well as neglecting the domestic sphere, leaving the poor husbands to juggle the household. They also portrayed the idea that there was a threat that women would become so enfranchised that they would take men's jobs and all become lesbians. Therefore the imagery tended to concentrate on casting women as infantile, incompetent, irrational and willing to desert the family, as well as implying that the suffragettes were all trouser wearing, man-hating, bitter lesbians. There is a particular historical significance to depicting women as cats. These ideas have existed and evolved from the Salem Witch Trial right through to today's "crazy Cat lady" slur.
