All Star Seattle Quilt No. 4

- The All Star Seattle Quilts feature calm images--sailboats, seagulls, and rolling waves, forests and the Space Needle at dawn-- alongside bright fabrics celebrating some of Seattle's many cultures--Mexican florals, Japanese cranes, Vietnamese tigers, and African wax prints.
- We stitched in some psychedelic mountains, young musicians, adorable kittens, and bike-riding dogs too, just for fun.
- A colorful patch of Puget Sound with a ferry, the Pike Place Market, and Mount Rainier, forms the centerpiece.

The “All Star Seattle Quilts” celebrate favorite local institutions: No. 4 includes:
- a black T from Sonic Boom Records in Ballard,
- a green T from Magus Books in the U District,
- a navy blue Seattle Seahawks emblem,
- the blue logo of the Mariners baseball team,
the red and black check fabric of a Seattle University shirt, and
the purple and gold emblem of the University of Washington.
- Two squares embellished with Madras plaid from a pair of Bermuda shorts celebrate Canlis Restaurant, est. 1950: they commemorate the Canlis Crab Shack, launched in 2020, and a “Hawaiian Night” special event.

- An embrace of vintage and a commitment to sustainability: this quilt includes vintage linens from an antique store in Saint Louis, MO, and pockets from a flannel shirt and a worn pair of Levi’s jeans, to project an aura of living history, as well as the shimmer that only real damask can bring. The orange silk was found in a tiny treasure store in Seattle’s Chinatown that exists no longer, due to the pandemic; the quizzical sun is from a vintage world map, gift of Stroble Stuff, in Puyallup, WA. Some imperfections remain: tactile reminders of the fabrics’ age and prior use.
- African fabrics: the squares with brown and green flowers and leaves (the middle of the quilt) hail from Black designer-vendors in Rahway, NJ and Seattle, WA.
- The “musicians” (2nd from top) are by contemporary designer Alexander Henry Nicole.
- Two pockets, in the front right (Levi's jeans) and left (flannel shirt), provide hiding places for treasures, and link this textile artwork to the ongoing series of civil rights "Respect" Quilts.
- The back is made of heavy purple velour, for a royal look and comfort.
- Features a cloth sleeve in black cotton with dayglo peace symbols for a bold contrast, and wall-hanging.
- Fully lined with a clean white cotton, and quilted with polyester batting: a 4-ply blanket
- Finished the old-fashioned way, with tiny knots of embroidery floss, and a hand-sewn binding.
- The custom-designed city skylines on Batik cotton (in random patterns of yellow, red, and pink) are silkscreens by Proforma.
