A bit about social stories

A social story is a short and simple description of a particular situation, activity or event.

They serve the following purposes:

Explaining what to expect in that situation and why.
Helping children understand the desired or expected behaviours in a particular situation, activity or event.
Supporting children learn ways of behaving in these situations.

They are helpful because they present information in a literal way which supports children’s understanding of difficult or ambiguous situations.

What is great about social stories is that they are versatile. They can be adapted based on the age of the child, the needs of the child and the language the child uses.

If deep breaths don’t appear to be working, other anger strategies can be suggested. However, the key points remain the same…

Letting the child know it’s ok to feel all emotions, angry, sad, worried, etc.

Reinforcing although the emotion is ok. certain behaviours are not allowed and why this is.

Providing the child with more helpful responses which can help them. They may not know how to handle big emotions so we can help teach them this.
