Follow your arrow - words that really resonate with me. Creating has always been something that is not only intrinsic and instinctive to me, but vital. Whatever sphere I am in in life, I always seem most content when I am able to be creative - areas where I have to strictly 'follow the leader' feel stilted and stifling. Feathers and arrows have close ties to me, and so the beautiful handmade ceramic feather pendant in this piece represents that arrow here - within your core, that insistent voice that when you quieten, you can tune into, listen to and follow. Of course, it is the perfect rustic turquoise! From this, I have created the main body of the necklace using a pairing of contrasting beads - firstly pearls, which are some of my favourite beads to work with, especially Biwa-style pearls. They have the most stunning, organic quality to them, so tactile; lustrous yet rustic - perfect for my jewellery. I have used some deep purple-ish silver horizontal stick pearls for much of the body of this necklace, immediately creating a statement. I have added to this statement with the beautiful pendant - the artisan ceramic feather in such a vivid, matte turquoise, with deeply etched textural lines and dark shading on both sides (the pendant is the same on each side). The top of the necklace is formed from deep silver-ish purple beads - Bohemian-cut Czech glass beads, with a heavy etched almost shimmering finish. I have interrupted these two strands with some handmade beads - a large handwoven glass round in a glowing mint-turquoise green, and a pair of handmade lampwork glass rings in an oil-slicked purple. All the beads are separated by pretty, visually textural and colourful Japanese glass seed beads. The necklace fastens with a nickel-free brass lobster clasp and long extender chain, making it wearable between 45 and 56cm. It closes with another of my handwoven glass rounds in a rustic turquoise. My {song}beads are hand-stitched to my own design, one 1 or 2mm bead at a time, around a wooden core bead, using thermally bonded nylon thread - strong yet light. The bead I've created here contains over 200 tiny 2mm beads - each one individually woven into this beautiful, unusual bead. Visually textural and oh-so-tactile!
