The Catcher in the Rye is a novel written by J. D. Salinger and published in 1951.
The novel tells the story of Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old New Yorker who has just been expelled from his high school. The novel caused a great stir after its publication, as it is undoubtedly provocative, and because Salinger, told in it the conflicts of sexuality in an open and unabashed way. The Catcher in the Rye became a classic of modern American literature almost as soon as it was published.
Jerome David Salinger was an American writer best known for his novel The Catcher in the Rye. Later Salinger published the short story collections Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, and a collection of short novels Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction. He tried his best to escape exposure to public life and attention, and was forced to continually fight against all the unwanted attention he received, as the cult figure he became during his lifetime.
