A combination of two lessons in one, follow the written instructions and/ or the work in progress photos, and paint your own African Lion in watercolor
The majority of wild Lions live in Africa, however there is also a small population in western India. Male Lions weigh around 190 kg, that’s almost 30 stone, and this weight enables them to look after the pride, and also hunt for large prey items. Their mane grows and darkens with age, and can get to 16 cm long. It is thought to act as protection for the head and neck during fights.
This tutorial is classed in the advanced category, as there are lots of different techniques involved. An ability to paint very fine lines is crucial for the mane to look realistic, and this can be one of the harder skills to learn. That said, if you are a beginner, why not work on aspects of the Lion as study pieces, and when you feel confident have a go at the whole piece. There’s nothing to lose, and a lot of learning to be had in the process.
This is an instant PDF download, you could start painting this Lion in a matter of minutes. You don’t even need to wait for the post to arrive! You will receive a 36-page PDF document. Set out in the same way as the tutorials I write for magazines. However, you get lots more large photos of the different stages.
Downloadable lessons enable you to work at your own speed, you can dip in and out of the content, you can spend time studying the fine details and practise the various techniques as often as you like.
Have fun with this lesson, take your time and let me know how you get on. Try printing off the last few pages which have the larger versions of the step-by-step photos for additional help.
