Rousseau & Leveillé for Baccarat - Crystal decanter and Bowl - enameled decor - Japonism

Pale purple crystal decanter and bowl, with enameled white flowers and golden leafs and stems. The decanter has a gold enameled swallow and is signed on the bottom with initials, resembling 'fr' for François-Eugène Rousseau (1827-1890). He worked with the crystal articles of Baccarat, such as vases, decanters, etc.. The enameled floral decoration in Japanese style are characteristic of his glass art. He cooperated with Ernest-Baptiste Leveillé; the gold enameled bird decorations are one of his specialties.

The crystal is not entirely clear, but very pale purple, with a subtle iridescence to it, probably from a coating on the inside. It is impossible to catch all this subtle beauty on a photo.
Both decanter and bowl are in very good, used condition. No chips nor cracks, smooth glass and undamaged enamel. Micro scratches and a little lime scale from use; some wear to the gold on the bowl.
Height x width 21 x 12 cm for the decanter, 7.5 x 11 cm for the bowl. Total weight 560 g.

François-Eugène Rousseau, born in Paris on March 17, 1827 and died in the same city on June 12, 1890, is a master glass maker, artist of the decorative arts movement. His work introduces Japonism into French glassware, since his creations mostly use Japanese motifs. He designed colored crystal vases for Baccarat with the typical 'Clair de Lune' design.
In 1869, two of his painted glasses were purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum. His Japanese glass works produced with the probable help of the brothers Appert in Clichy and the crystal making factory Baccarat, appeared in 1874 in Paris at the Fourth Exhibition of the Central Union of Fine Arts Applied to Industry.
