Highlights

  • Designed by GorkhaNepal
  • Materials: Tibetan canvas cotton, water, dust of golden powder, Hand Painted, Poster, Tibetan Hide Glue, gold, poster color, stone powder

This is an original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicting Yamantaka with his consort Vajra Vetali. Yamantaka is one of the most powerful protector deities in Vajrayana Buddhism. He represents the fierce force that destroys ignorance, fear, and death itself.

Yamantaka is considered the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri. While Manjushri represents peaceful wisdom, Yamantaka shows that wisdom can also appear in a fierce form to overcome powerful obstacles.

The name Yamantaka means “the destroyer of Yama,” the lord of death. This symbolism shows that enlightened wisdom has the power to conquer death and illusion.

Iconography and Symbolism

Yamantaka appears in an intense, powerful form, filled with symbolic meaning.

Buffalo Head and Multiple Faces
He has nine faces, with a large buffalo head at the center. The buffalo head represents the destruction of ignorance and death.

Many Arms and Legs
Yamantaka is shown with 34 arms and 16 legs, each holding ritual weapons and sacred objects. These represent the many methods used to overcome ignorance and negative forces.

Wrathful Expression
His red hair rises upward like flames, and his wide eyes and fangs express fierce determination to protect the Dharma and destroy harmful forces.

Union with Vajra Vetali
He embraces his consort, Vajra Vetali. Their union symbolizes the balance of wisdom and method, a key teaching in tantric Buddhism.

Sacred Posture
Yamantaka stands on a lotus and sun disc surrounded by flames of wisdom, representing the transformation of ignorance into enlightened awareness.
