Landscapes of My Memory, I - original contemporary abstract landscape painting in oil by Dawn Chandler
Landscapes of My Memory, I merges some of my favorite places into one dreamscape. Deep evergreen forests, inviting mountain meadows, fragrant wildflowers, mountains and high country lakes, blue skies, dancing clouds and birdflight all merge together and transport me. As my eye moves across this painting, it pauses here and there, and I feel as though I'm journeying through one landscape to the next. The journey changes as I move my eye.
It's interesting to note that this painting started a few years ago as a "traditional" landscape of a view across a high New Mexico mountain meadow — the meadow above Apache Springs Camp on the Philmont Ranch, to be exact. I had the good luck to be up there on summer evening to watch the sunset over the Moreno Valley and distant Wheeler Peak. In that evening light the meadow was burnished green-gold and dotted with lovely pink wildflowers. The pink flowers in the foreground of this painting are rooted in that memory. Same with the sliver of view of a meadow just right of center.
The shadowy evergreen trees on the right transport me back to Vermont forests. And that inviting mountain lake? I'm thinking that's Summit County, Colorado.
But really, these places can be anywhere that's meaningful to you. Let them carry you away.
