Chrysoprase develops as water weathers nickel-bearing volcanic rocks over time. Eventually, this nickel-tinged water works its way into surrounding iron-rich rock layers, forming veins of startling apple green within a rusty brown matrix. It’s this trace amount of nickel that give the gemstone its celebrated golden-green color. (In Greek, "chrysos" means gold and "prasino" means green.) ------------------ METAPHYSICAL CHRYSOPRASE According to legend, chrysoprase was the “Stone of Victory” and the key to Alexander the Great’s success. A large chunk of chrysoprase formed the centerpiece of his favorite war belt. After his campaign in India, Alexander laid the belt aside while bathing in the Euphrates River, and a serpent bit off the stone and slithered into the water with it. Alexander never won another battle and died soon after. Perhaps because of this story, in medieval times chrysoprase was believed to change color in the presence of poison, and it supposedly allowed the wearer to communicate with snakes and lizards. The gemstone’s bright green color also became associated with spring, renewal, and the Greek/Roman goddess Aphrodite/Venus. It was thought to bring joy, attract new love, encourage forgiveness, heal a broken heart, improve fertility, and promote prosperity.
