Antique Pewter Teapot: Broadhead & Atkin, Sheffield - Mid 1800s - Large - Display Piece

Rare Antique Large Octagonal Pewter Teapot - Broadhead and Atkin

A stunning large pewter teapot, in an octagonal shape with heavily sloping sides and a pedestal. The handle and finial are carved wood, painted black.

The base is marked with the letters 'BB' (we're not sure what they refer to) 'VR', for Queen Victoria, the makers 'Broadhead and Atkin Sheffield', the pattern number '6696' and the number '5', which references the capacity. It's 5 half pints - so two and a half pints.

Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and Broadhead and Atkin ceased trading in 1853, so we can date this accurately to between those dates. This is at least 172 years old.

Given its age, it unsurprisingly has some damage and shows signs of repair. This was a valuable piece for a Victorian household, and when it got damaged, it had to be repaired.

The bottom of the handle has a wired repair and is a little wobbly, but secure. There's also a crack in the wood towards the top. The finial is a little loose, and may have also been repaired at some point, along with possibly the side of the main pot. However, the hinge is smooth and solid. There are some minor dents to the body, but overall it's in remarkable condition. It's been well used, for sure, but that's part of the charm.

There is no mark to say what's it's made of, but it looks like pewter.

A truly impressive collectible piece, that is also a striking decorative item. It would also make a stunning vase!
