This is a lovely little Victorian mourning brooch, dating to around 1880. Jet was only found on North Yorkshire beaches, particularly Whitby. It became popular as mourning jewellery after the death of Queen Victoria‘s husband Prince Albert, when the whole court went into decades of official mourning. The brown marks on the paper are a simple test for real jet, you need to find an area with a slight flea bite or scratch, and when this is rubbed onto a white paper it will leave a brown coal residue.

This is an antique piece, over 150 years old, and there are some tiny scratches, nicks etc in keeping with a brooch of this age. The class is a simple C clasp, typical of the period, within overlong pin, also an indicator of age. The measure is in centimetres.
