Its origin is estimated to date back to between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, during the time of the Achaemenid Persians. Although the originals were made entirely of silver or even gold, nowadays it is more common for the base to be made of copper, a fairly flexible material, which is then silver-plated for the final finish.
