This is the DIGITAL EDITION of "Quilted New York: Celebrate the City with Fabric and Color"! You will receive a link to download a PDF. [If you would prefer to buy a paperback, see the listing at https://www.etsy.com/listing/1363297210/quilted-new-york-book-celebrate-the-city]
Do you love fabric, quilting and/or New York City? “Quilted New York; Celebrate the City with Fabric and Color,” will show you how to combine these passions into a quilt with a stupendous Manhattan view!
The 82-page book contains patterns for two different quilts. One's about 60” square, and the other is about 70”; but you can easily change those dimensions by adjusting the size of your background and/or borders.
The book includes patterns for 11 structures inspired by NYC's most iconic architecture, from Art Deco (like the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building) to post-modern (like the New Museum of Contemporary Art.) There's also a tenement building. See the entire building list in the "Table of Contents" page among the photos.
Although they are mostly pieced, a few buildings also require a little fusible raw-edge appliqué, for which there are full-size templates.
This book teaches a piecing method created specifically to meet the challenge of cityscapes. Raw edges are pressed back DURING piecing. After the building is pieced, it's ready to be appliquéd in place, to a quilt, pillow, tote bag, etc., with no need to rip seam ends. The technique works not just for the projects in the book, but almost any building or cityscape, real or imagined, that you might want to depict in fabric.
The book also contains:
- Color photos and diagrams for virtually every step.
- Precut-, stash-, and scrap-friendly designs. For most buildings, one fat-quarter, plus a few more contrasting smaller pieces, are all that’s needed. You are more likely to have to shop for larger pieces of background fabric, like the 2 yards required for the sky in "Condensed New York," or the assorted 1/4 - 1 yard pieces needed for the "Color Block New York" quilt's multiple backgrounds.
- Simple tools. See the 'Supplies' page among the photos.
- Style options. Give your quilt a modern look by using mostly solids; or for added fun and texture throw in some geometric prints, especially plaids!
- Detailed directions for successful appliqué of the buildings to the background; especially turned and raw-edge machine appliqué, with and without fusible web. (Hand appliqué is also an option).
- Quilting ideas include “streets of New York”-themed free motion quilting designs: Pigeons, t dollar-a-slice pizza, bagels, and other sights, smells and tastes that make New York interesting. (Sometimes too interesting.)
This book is for confident beginners and beyond, but even the most experienced quilters will learn from the unique piecing techniques. Directions are detailed, but also improv-friendly – follow the book’s steps closely, or put your own twist on it!
About the author: I’ve been a quilter for 30 years, and a journalist for more. I was born in New York, and my 20th century immigrant family has had a multigenerational love affair (with the occasional “what the heck?”) with this city, which is so fascinating in every way, including its architecture.
For the digital edition, you don't have to print out every page of the 84-page PDF. To save ink and paper, put it on a laptop or tablet in your sewing room to follow the directions, and only print out the (relatively few) pages that contain full-size templates. Note also that in this digital edition, the front and back cover are on the last two pages (pp. 83-4. I did this so that all the interior page numbers are the same as the PDF's page number.)

I also have listing where you can buy both digital books, 'Scrap Cities' and 'Quilted New York,' and take $10 off the total price.
