Small size Wood plate - Four Circles Chataku tray

Handcrafted Bark tray carved in the shape of four circle ornament and decorated with bamboo burl texture of circle grooves. The design inspiration stems from the double curved geometry, so called Gaussian curvature. Small tray serves as a tea pot lid stand or tea needle holder. This piece of wood is pleasant to the touch and tactile to hold in hand.

This series of wood artwork was born from the pieces of random wood collected along various walks around the countryside and local parks. The materials used in carving uneven squares are various types of bark, pieces of bug-bitten wood, trunks or small remains of the trees left by nature on my way. Majority of wood was hand sawed with some exception, where the wood was extremely hard to treat. Trays are not ideal in purpose. This reminds of artificial world around us, where the imperfection of things is treated as unnegotiable fail in meeting standards. The appearance of the tray represents the acceptance and controversy to the concept of industrialisation and manifests the sustainability in carving the wood by hand only.
