Quince is native to Asian countries and not all gardeners know about its special beauty. What makes it special? It flowers before the leaves emerge, in the late winter, when many plants have not yet come out of dormancy. In the warm season it’s a background plant. It waits to show it’s beauty until a warm late winter day when all of a sudden you turn your head and notice beautiful big orange flowers on a very Asian looking plant. Bring inside the twisted cut branches of quince in midwinter, and the flowers will open even earlier. ‘Double Take Orange’ looks fabulous near gold mop cypress and orange azalea. Add an accent boulder and Japanese garden juniper to complete the look.
