Highlights
The Copper John was created by Colorado's own John Barr in the 1990's. John is widely considered to be one of the most creative and deliberate fly designers ever. His patterns always served the purpose of solving a problem. Here, with the Copper John, the thin abdomen tightly wrapped with copper wire gets this fly down to the largest predatory trout. The wonderful use of brown biots to suggest a tail allows this fly to imitate Mayflies, Stoneflies and a host of other aquatic insects that make up most of what a trout will see and eat every day of the year!
It is often used as a dropper fly in a hopper-dropper fly combination. It is particularly useful in discolored water. Smaller sizes are fished in the Fall and Spring and larger versions are usually fished in the summer.
The Copper John is one of the most sought after nymph patterns of all time.
