Are the insects you use real?

Of course! All of the butterflies, moths, and other critters we work with are authentic specimens. Many of them we find ourselves, in windowsills and on walks, after they have already died. All of the others are ethically sourced, and also taken after dying of natural causes- or in the case of roadkill, untimely demises. We see this ultimately as a way of honoring these creatures after they’ve died & preserving their beauty for years to come.

How do you mean “ethically sourced”?

The butterflies are raised in aviaries & sanctuaries all over the world. To keep the operations running, females are brought in from the wild to lay their eggs inside a large, enclosed habitat. This way she and all of her babies are protected from disease, parasites, & predators. One female butterfly can lay thousands of eggs! In the wild, only a handful will survive into adulthood because of all of these obstacles. In captivity, almost all will survive. Once the butterflies reach adulthood, many are released back into the wild to help increase the indigenous populations. The best way to protect plant & animal species is by preserving their natural habitat! We support insect farms that help protect these biodiversity regions. They also assure stability in these wonderful creatures’ populations. Native peoples are encouraged to grow plants to sustain the insects, opposed to clearing land for cash crops. Tropical rainforest supports 75% of the world's insect species, but covers only 6% of the Earth’s surface & is rapidly declining due to habitat destruction through agricultural uses & industrialization. Habitat destruction has long been recognized as the #1 threat to wildlife. Conservationists recommend working with insects as a renewable resource due to all the associatedted benefits.

Where do you get your bones & other specimens?

The various skulls and other bones that we use are purchased from businesses with a moral compass in line with our own. Oftentimes, they’re procured from roadkill but sometimes they are casualties of the pet trade and donations from friends. Most of the other, varied specimens we will scavenge ourselves, some are donations from kind friends. Some of the more exotic specimens we occasionally source from ethical & sustainable practices, similar to how we procure our bones.

What about the toads?

The toads used to make these bags were humanely euthanized in an effort to curb their rampant populations in places where this invasive amphibian has unfortunately been causing serious ecological harm. We love the idea of transmuting something negative into something a little more positive as well as functional. The toads are anesthetized and then frozen, considered the most humane and painless death for a cold blooded creature. Read more about these fascinating creatures on the corresponding listings!

Care instructions for EarWings

Our classic, laminate EarWings are lightweight, yet durable & water-resistant though not waterproof. They are flexible but should not be bent intentionally. Do not shower or swim in them! They should be okay if you are caught out in the rain for short periods. Use the sleeve provided to keep them together & safe when not being worn. If cared for, they should last you for years to come! If they get smudged with fingerprints or grime, you can use a cloth or paper towel dampened with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean them; we recommend 90% isopropyl where available.

Care instructions for Cane Toads

The unique toad leather will absorb the natural oils from your skin over time, as well as polish itself against your clothing, making it softer & better with use! It may darken slightly over time, this is natural and simply a part of the aging process. It is firm yet supple! Notice how well each individual wart is preserved. The natural oils of your hands should be enough to keep this leather well conditioned, but if you live in a less humid environment, but if you feel like your leather is getting dry, I have found this treatment effective: take a very slight slathering of coconut oil on the fingertips and massage lightly over every inch. Be careful not to use too much oil or it can cause the leather to darken.

Care instructions for resin pieces

Our resin work is very durable, made with a high quality epoxy compound used mainly for bar tops and floors. If the piece should become dirty or covered in fingerprints, you can use a cloth dampened with isopropyl rubbing alcohol to clean it; 90% isopropyl alcohol works best. Should the piece become scratched or marred, it is possible to polish it! Use a cotton buff & polishing compound appropriate for resin. Keep the piece moving & let the buff do the work; meaning you do not want to buff any one area more than a couple of seconds. Wash with soap and water to remove any polishing residue.
