KEYWORDS: Amethyst and Copper Necklace, Raw Purple Gemstone Crystal Pendant Jewelry, February Birthstone
DETAILS:
Stone: Amethyst
Size: The full pendant is 5cm (2 in or 50mm) long.
Two separate big chunks of raw amethyst are the stars of the show on this pendant, stacked on top of one another and wrapped in a grown cage of copper all the way down.
After the copper was set on this piece, I gave it a heavy dose of patina, and then sanded away parts. There are bright copper spots, and the shadows are a deep dark black.
NECKLACE: adjustable length coated black faux leather cord.
~~About Amethyst~~
Amethyst is the most popular purple gemstone. This variety of Quartz is the birthstone for February.
Many people call this stone the "all healer", or the "gem of fire". The ancient Greeks carved their drinking cups out of Amethyst, thinking that it could prevent intoxication. Medieval Europeans thought wearing amethyst into battle would help them heal quicker.
Some have said that copper could be used as an anti-inflammatory. Through time it was used to amplifies the properties of things it's paired with while creating a balance between your emotions and mind.
~~About the electroforming process~~
Electroforming is a process where electricity is used to "grow" metal onto an organic object. I use a mixture of copper sulfate, sulphuric acid, and other additives in a bath to pull copper off of wire or pipe (particle by particle) and deposit it onto the object. This is done using conductive paint and electricity. Yes, these are chemicals, and yes the process is a bit hazardous until the pendant is neutralized. The entire process from start to finish for just one piece can take up to a week! While you can control a lot of elements, each piece is 100% unique with this process. Combining nature with alchemy!
~~Caring for your electroformed jewelry~~
Each piece is sealed for protection. They are still semi delicate and should be treated with care. Do not wear your jewelry to shower or swim, rings while doing dishes, while exercising, or overnight to bed, etc. Treat with care as you would any fine jewelry. Raw gemstones can break if dropped or banged on things.
Copper will slowly oxidize over time. To prevent it as long as possible - avoid applying oils, lotions, or perfumes to the area you wear your jewelry. This metal can turn your skin green slightly once the protective coating starts to wear off. This is not an allergic reaction, it's normal. You can easily clean the marks off your skin with soap and water. Clear nail polish can be applied as a 'quick fix' to areas exposed to skin if you would rather this not happen (again, each piece is sealed, but this will wear off over time. This is preferred so your piece will age gracefully and develop it's own patina. They get better with time!).
