I use full grain leather, but here are the types in order of quality: Full Grain: Real, unmodified leather. Comes from the top layer of the hide, and nothing has been sanded off, so it can have blemishes, like scars or brands. It also naturally resists moisture pretty well. Top Grain: had the top layer sanded off to make it smoother. This means it's not as strong or weather resistant as full grain. But still pretty close. Genuine: is split off of the full and top grain leathers. Ever heard of suede? This is suede painted or coated to look like top grain leather. Bonded: basically the hot dog of leather. This is the dust that was sanded off of better leather. It gets mixed with glue and pressed into sheets.
