How much sun exposure do succulents need? It depends on the climate, locale, and type of plant. Along the coast of California, from the Bay Area south, most succulents are fine out in the open year-round. Inland, it's a different story; most succulents will need some sun protection in summer especially in the afternoon. But often all that is needed is the right microclimate, such as a lacy tree canopy. Incidentally, even in their native habitats, young cacti won't tolerate open exposure. They grow in the shade of nurse plants until they're large enough to handle the rigors of the desert.

What's the ideal light for succulents, indoors or out?

Actively growing succulents do best with full spectrum light that is bright and diffused—beneath shade cloth outdoors or (if in a greenhouse) translucent white plastic. (Optimal light is when shadows are fuzzy, not sharp.) Dormant succulents don’t need a full spectrum light source (fluorescent is fine if you’re overwintering them indoors).

This is a highly sought after plant. It has grown lovely in our 4" containers. Has lovely pink-white-green leaves. Its plump leaves are shaped just like little hearts, deep green in color lined with bright light blue. The new grown and stems are often tinged pink. The leaves appear on long cascading vines that hang straight down, creating an effect almost like a beaded curtain of heart-shaped leaves.

**HOW TO GROW:

Watering:
The string of hearts is a semi-succulent plant, which means it is more tolerant of dry soil than wet soil and is prone to rotting in wet soil. You should water it sparingly, if in doubt. You can always add more water.
You can confidently allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This plant goes dormant in Autumn and Winter and therefore needs less watering. The soil should be lightly moist in spring and summer.

Light conditions required:
Keep your string of hearts in bright light, with some direct sun (but not all day) for the best colour and plenty of leaves.
If you notice large spaces between leaves, the chances are the plant is not getting enough light.

Temperature and humidity:
This is a plant that enjoys 40-50% humidity.
Flowering:
The main attraction of this plant is the beautifully-shaped leaves and the gorgeous pattern on its trailing leaves, but it does also produce small purple flowers in the spring/summer.
