Origin: Transvaal, South Africa

Hydrogrossular is a mineral from the calcium and aluminum garnet family.

Hydrogrossular is translucent to opaque and can be green, bluish green, pink, white and gray in color.
The green color is due to chromium and perhaps iron, while the pink color is linked to the presence of manganese. Hydrogrossular may contain small dark gray or black inclusions. It has similarities with jade and has the names Transvaal jade and African jade.

Hydrogrossular is sometimes used as a gemstone. Green and pink hydrogrossulars come from South Africa, Canada and the United States.
The white hydrogrossular comes from Burma and China.
