Limbo was a boutique in NYC located on St. Mark’s Place from 1965-1975. Known for being the first store to sell used & pre-washed jeans, they were also one of the first stores to normalize unisex clothing. Limbo helped turn clothing into a medium that critiqued assumptions of both high and low culture, just as pop culture became the dominant culture. Limbo was a scene in itself and was the place to be seen. Many now-famous fashion designers were inspired from shopping here. In 1975, the store was sold to Trash & Vaudeville.
