Quilts should generally be washed once or twice a year (or seasonally) if used regularly, though they can be washed less frequently if a top sheet is used. For daily-use quilts, washing them every 3–6 months is standard, while heirloom or delicate quilts should be washed as rarely as possible—only when truly soiled.
Instead of washing, hang quilts outside in the sun to air out and freshen them, which kills bacteria without harsh washing. Treat stains immediately rather than washing the entire quilt.
