Includes the Heritage Club newsletter, Sandglass, describing the history of this volume, loosely inserted. This short novel depicts a poor family in a New York neighborhood, whose parents are drunk and abusive. As the children grow up, Maggie attempts to better herself, but is defeated by her desperate surrounds and the poverty of humanity surrounding her. Publishers refused to print Crane's manuscript as he wrote in 1893 due to its language and grim story. He eventually edited it to meet their demands so the first publications of Maggie are a tame version of the original. The edition is true to the original manuscript that Stephen Crane wrote. Tragically, the author died of tuberculosis at the age of 29.
