Sometimes I find stones that even I don't know what they are, but I got these and a couple others at the gem show because I love black and white contrasting stones. I ferreted out the name when a customer told me what they were. One cab is cut into a larger oval that measures 18x30 mm and the other is a round shape measuring 23.5mm in diameter.
Formed 50 to 70 million years ago Septarian nodules are a type of concretion where mudstone of some kind is interspersed with calcite or another carbonate-rich mineral. The calcite portions follow the pattern of radiating cracks, which occur during the unique creation of these formations. I have seem much of this material that is yellow and brown, but there is this black and white, too! It's perfect for sheik outfits and even Halloween jewelry!
I suggest using it as a pendant since calcite is fairly soft, but I know there are lots of folks who are more careful than I am. For them, something else might be more inviting. I'm sure it will look great in a silver setting.
The bottoms of the stones are unpolished.
