Seller's description

Boating. Painted with ink and pigments on silk. Signed Fujiwara Mitsuzane. It is attributed to Tosa Mitsuzane. Circa 19th C.

This elegant hanging scroll depicts a noble scene of courtly travelers setting out by boat, a classic motif deeply rooted in Japanese poetry and painting.
Dressed in beautifully patterned robes, the central man and his attendants sit calmly in a wooden boat as it glides across gently flowing waters. Their garments, rendered in refined colors and intricate designs, evoke the grace and sophistication of the classical aristocratic world. Above them, a small bird — perhaps a nightjar or swallow — flies freely across the pale sky, adding a sense of openness and poetic solitude. The result is a serene and evocative composition that beautifully captures the refined elegance of Japan’s courtly tradition.

Tosa Mitsuzane was a Japanese artist active during late Edo period in Japan. He was the eldest son of Tosa Mitsusada (1738-1806). After his father’s death, Mitsuzane succeeded his father’s position retained artist by the Tokugawa shogunate. He worked on wall paintings at Edo castle.

Condition: There are some light marks are present on the painting itself, otherwise it is in fine condition with age. The scroll mounting is in fine condition with insignificant light marks. It is accompanied by a paulownia wooden storage box.

Painting: W13 5/8” x H31 3/4” (W34.5m x H80.5cm)
Scroll: W18 1/2” x H65” (W47cm x H165cm)
