The Pythagorean cup is also known as the Tantalus cup or the cup of the frugal. Its design prevents it from being completely filled and then emptied. A column, hollow in the middle, is attached to the center of the cup. A narrow, tubular passage leads from the inside of the cup up into the column and then into the inner cavity. When a liquid is poured into the cup, it rises in the passage to the upper edge of the inner cavity, which leads to the base of the cup. Then, a mechanism is triggered by hydrostatic pressure, acting on the principle of a siphon, which empties the cup suddenly. Pythagoras used this to illustrate the concept of measure to his students. Because the cup is made of glass, its workings are clearly visible.
The cup's overall height is approximately 15 cm. A drip tray is included.
