Rare 1957 Emerson Portable Radio: Space Age Design, Turquoise Tuner

Really outstanding example of late '50s recognition in commercial products of what was happening in space. Just like cars and retail items for the home, radios especially portable radios adopted space age or space race designs.

This 1957 Emerson model 879-B in Rust and Ivory, with the extremely rare Turquoise tuner dial on top with matching rust colored transistor radio style dial volume control on the face of the radio, and the split rail brass, steel and matching plastic handle.

The radio is as found I have not tried to clean it in any way, I like to pass that on to the new buyer. The overall design of the cabinet is striking one half is rust colored, the front,The other half, the back is ivory. The front rust colored half has a geometric checkerboard front designed grille, which has a gold painted overlay that does have some wear on it. There's also about a two and a half inch light burn mark on one side of the ivory cabinet shown in the photographs. Looks like some kind of a hot wire possibly hit it. It does not go through the cabinet it is just on the surfacish. The handle twists a little bit and the steel parallel bars have some surface rust / deterioration. There is substantial wear on the turquoise tuner dial top as shown in the photograph.

The inside of the case actually looks brand new, the case is extremely clean I don't see any rust or any visible deterioration. All the labels are intact and almost complete also shown in the photograph This is an AC/DC unit the power cord is present and wrapped up inside the case. There is no other damage on the case there's no chips no cracks no breaks.

This is an extremely rare and hard to come by perfect example of the mid-century modern craze with modernism and space age space race design. Once this started in the mid '50s everything in America looked to space for inspiration in design and it lasted well over 20 years. We didn't lose the fins in automobiles until almost 1980.

This is a great addition to any radio collection in any mid-century modern interior.

RETURNS
We have a 7-day return policy on all items sold on our site. From the date you received the item you have 7 days to notify us of problems with the shipment.
If an item is received damaged and it happened in shipment, a claim must be made by the seller through the shipping company. In this case no refunds will be issued by seller.
No refunds will be issued until items are returned to seller.

SHIPPING
All shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. All return shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, unless the item received was not as described, in which case we will send a return shipping label and issue a refund.
Any and all return items must include appropriate insurance to protect in shipment back to buyer. Items returned to buyer without insurance will not be accepted.

GUARANTEE
We guarantee the authenticity of everything that we sell. If we list an item as Catalin/Bakelite, we mean it is from the 1930s to the 1950s and we have tested it with Semi-chrome or some other method, and it tests positive for Bakelite.

We only sell Original Bakelite Jewelry and Collectibles from the 1930-1950s, and Lucite Jewelry from the 1940s to the 1970s. We do not sell any reworked or newly created plastic jewelry.

All vintage and antique electronics are sold as is, with no guarantee as too operational condition, even if in the description, the item is described as working.

PACKAGING
We recycle our packaging to try to reduce our carbon footprint, but we work diligently to safely pack and ship your item so it arrives in good condition, as you expected. In some cases with higher value vintage radios we must separate the chassis from the case and this may require two boxes and will be additional shipping expense for the buyer.
