Handmade Custom Resin 3.75” Rocketeer Action Figure 5 Points of Articulation Dave Stevens Tribute for Charity

Item highlights

  • Materials: foam, Testors model paint, silicone molds, Aves Apoxie clay, epoxy resin

Seller's description

This is a custom 3.75” 5 points of articulation action figure of Dave Stevens’ famous high flying hero, Cliff Secord (a.k.a. The Rocketeer). The points of articulation are - neck, shoulders, and hips (similar to Kenner style Star Wars figures).

This is a very limited run, as each figure was handmade from an original sculpt.  A silicone mold was made for each piece - the head, torso halves, limbs, and rocketpack, and then epoxy resin was used to make a casting.  The parts were then finished by hand to make sure they fit together.  The parts were then painted and assembled.  Each figure comes with a pistol that can fit into the right hand and an attached holster on Cliff’s right leg.   Since each figure is handcrafted, it may look slightly different from the pictures.  Although resin is quite strong, it is not as durable to side to side or shear forces as the PVC plastic often used for mass produced figures.  Therefore, this would be considered an adult collectible (generally considered to be 14+).

I used the title from the 1991 Chinese release of the film, 火箭人 (which literally means “Rocketman”), for the cover art as an ode to the film’s dialogue as well as the toy imports coming out of places like Hong Kong and Taiwan in the 80s, around the era the comic book of this character first emerged (1982).  This was a fun project that combined Photoshopping, sculpting, resin casting, painting, eBay scouring, working with foam, and traditional illustration and painting.

Each figure comes with a protective plastic carrying case with a foam bed (also hand made/fitted),  original artwork on the cover sleeve, and access to an exclusive conversation with Billy Campbell, the Rocketeer from the 1991 live action film and the 2019 animated cartoon recorded during the production of these figures.

All proceeds from this auction will go towards The Hairy Leukemia Foundation.  Hairy cell leukemia is the illness that Dave Stevens died of and is the organization to which his family makes charitable contributions.  The Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation is an international nonprofit organization to educate, advocate for, and assist patients and families affected by the condition.  Many thanks to staff at the HCLF, Jennifer Bawcum Stevens, head of the Rocketeer Trust and Dave’s sister, and Billy Campbell for their support of this project.
