This image was originally made in an illustration class at The Rhode Island School of Design where I was a student in the late 90's. Apparently, Shepard Fairey's "Andre The Giant Has A Posse" image had also been designed for the same class, although surely for a different assignment. This particular assignment was to design an internationally legible symbol for an emotion-a great assignment. Thank you, Mr David Porter. So here is my submission for depression.

As someone who has struggled with it for a good, long time, it's heartening to see depression and anxiety disorders recognized by society which surely makes a difference for people who may be struggling, feeling as though the pain of their existence is theirs alone; that they are responsible for its cause and convinced of its permanence. When you are in the shit, it can feel very lonely. Sometimes the weight of depression can seem unbearable, preventing you from seeking out the exact thing that would help you feel better.

These days there is a lot of bad news, a lot of work to do, a lot of cat hair on your black jeans... There are some things that a strong cup of coffee just can't fix. Sometimes you need a symbol to ward off people who seem to always be having a good day, even as you are drenched by a torrential-downpour of bad vibes. No matter your affliction, no matter your prescription, this sticker is for you.
