Raffia is a natural fiber that is extracted from a type of palm tree present in Africa and which is worked in Madagascar in an exceptional way. The know-how of Malagasy artisans passed from generation to generation gives rise to endless ways of weaving raffia that are applied to various products, including bags and hats. A bag usually takes between 2 and 5 days to weave depending on its difficulty, so it is not an industrial process but merely handmade. Artisans and artisans can come together and weave together or weave from their homes, which facilitates family reconciliation for many women and helps support their families.
