This was created in the dark of wandering, which we all endure as a part of our walk on this planet, in this incarnation. There cannot be great light without great darkness, and we are each allotted this experience for a limited time, enduring all of the experiences that are a part of being human: joy, bliss, laughter but also loss, darkness and grief.

I am older now, and have lost my parents, friends, and loved ones whose absence is something no presence can fill. And the last three years with the pandemic and crazy alternate reality we seem to have slipped into have rendered me absolutely speechless at times, and in the dark of my own wandering. I contracted COVID and then long COVID and have wrestled with it for almost three years. There have been some very real moments when I am questioning everything, when I forget how to see the beauty. When all the paints and inks and papers reveal nothing at all.

And sometimes I turn to souls like Emily Dickinson, and live within books and don’t come out for months. I was in such a place when I read her words about hope and wanted to imagine hope as a thing with feathers (which I thought sounded quite lovely). And that is this illustration.

We all need to consciously invoke hope sometimes, whether we are losing someone or have lost, or are dealing with illness (our own or someone else’s). This print comes with my own prayer for you, whoever you are.

That you remember you.
That you do not get lost but instead, remember hope.

May it serve as a physical reminder that others are hoping, too.
