Viking volva wand replica with brass tip ornament, hand forged in iron and brass after an original of around 900 AD in the National Museum of Denmark. Made by a Yorkshire blacksmith whose volva replicas have been exhibited in Sweden.

THE HISTORY
The word völva means "staff-bearer". In the Viking Age the völur were seeresses who practised seiðr, Norse trance magic and prophecy, travelling from farm to farm and sitting high above the household to call up the spirits and foretell what the year would bring. In the Saga of Erik the Red, the seeress Thorbjörg arrives carrying a staff bound with brass and set with stones about its hilt.

Iron staffs like this have been found in the graves of wealthy women across Scandinavia, at Fyrkat in Denmark and at Klinta on Öland among them. They were women of high status, buried with their staffs, their finery and sometimes their whole households.

Many of those staffs share one curious feature: a cage of iron rods near the top, opened out around the shaft. Some see in it the shape of a distaff holding unspun flax, and with it the Norns, who sit at the foot of Yggdrasil spinning the thread of every life. This wand carries that same form in its double twist hilt: the bar is split into strands, opened out and twisted into a cage, then closed again and finished with a forged ring. Holding one of these replicas connects you to that line of wise women.

THE REPLICA
Years ago the museum's curator kindly gave me the exact measurements of this staff, so I could make both exact and oversized replicas of it, and of another volva staff in the collection, for the Viking museum exhibition on women in Viking history in Stockholm. This piece is made as close as possible to the original, using the same materials and methods, with allowance for the organic nature of hand forged work.

CARE
Wipe the iron with a little oil or wax and keep it dry. Brass can be left to darken or polished bright.

WITH ITS OWN FORGE SCALE
Every wand is forged to order, and comes with a small pouch of forge scale from its own forging: the flakes of iron or copper that fall away as your wand is heated and hammered into shape. It is the wand's own skin, shed in the fire as it became itself. I include a printed card with the Forge Scale Hallowing, my grounding and blessing rite, so you can consecrate the wand with its scale, bind it to you and make it your own. At its heart you hold the scale beneath the wand and speak the binding words: "I offer you the skin you shed to become your true self, so that you may see my true soul, and we are bonded eternally." Keep the scale to ground your wand again whenever it needs it. Iron scale can be laid across your threshold in the old way of guarding a home; copper scale can be kept by the door or hearth to draw warmth and luck in.
