Cyperus Papyrus also know as Egyptian reed or paper reed is native to Africa. It is best known as the source of the ancient paper, papyrus. In ancient times it was widely cultivated in the Nile Delta, but now is nearly extinct there. It is an ornamental reed clumping grass that can reach up to 8 feet. It features a grass like cluster of triangular green stems . Each stem is topped with up to 100 thread like rays each reaching 4-12 inches long. At the end of each ray is a clusters of brownish flowers that eventually turn completely brown and when developed resembles a feather duster at first and will may grow up to 4-12 inches across. These are often used by birds, especially the social species, as nesting sites in its native habitat. These brown, nut like fruits are loved by birds. This is a warm weather plant and should be brought in in winter. This was originally an aquatic plant, but does well in medium to large water features or soil. 10 seeds
Uses: Ornamental grass, multipliable plants will provide privacy. Planted in containers it can be used on patio, balcony and in pool area, dried flower arrangements
Planting instructions: Start indoors February to March. Press seeds gently into soil. The seedlings will turn yellow with too little light or too little water, or in temps below 60 Fahrenheit. Plant in area that has partial to full sun. Plant requires moist, well drained soil.
