Orca Cousteau Conservation Letterpress Print // orca conservation / killer whale / orca print / whale art / save our seas / save the whales

I'm a lifelong lover of orcas (as far back as I can remember) and I fulfilled my dream of seeing them in the wild when I moved to Seattle. The southern-resident killer whales (SRKW), also known as the J, K, and L Pods, make their home in the Puget Sound and nearby waters, but they're in danger of extinction.

These orcas' main food source during the summer months, chinook salmon, has been severely depleted due to overfishing, pollution, and other factors. Starvation in the resident orca pods has led to loss of calves and severe malnutrition and dehydration, as the salmon provide both nutrients and water to the orcas. Emergency response teams have devised plans to try to help the ailing J Pod in the short-term, but these whales need our help in the long term. In 2018, J35 captured the attention of the world by pushing her dead calf through the water for 17 days. She has since birthed a new calf, born in 2020. Only 73 orcas are left in this area as of spring 2023, and the population is dwindling at an alarming rate.

I donate twice a year to the Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor and am a big fan of the decades of research they've done. I encourage you to look them up and read more about what they do there!
