How do I care for my mud kitchen?

Our mud kitchens are made with 100% cedar, which is naturally rot and insect-resistant. Our painted kitchens are finished with 2 coats of exterior paint. However, like anything wooden in the garden, they will weather and the wood will move. The better covered, cleaned and looked after the longer they will last. For painted kitchens, we recommend they are repainted every couple of years or when they show signs of usage (please contact us if you would like a link to purchase a small can of your specific paint colour). Some people like to cover them with a bbq cover or tarpaulin to protect them in extreme weather conditions. Placing the kitchen on brick/stone/concrete is also better than direct soil.

What can I expect in terms of the mud kitchen weathering?

You may notice over time tiny cracks in the kitchen forming. This is just what happens with natural wood and is nothing to be concerned about. The tiny cracks form as the wood gets accustomed to its new environment and the process is called the wood ‘checking’. It does not have an effect on the structure or sturdiness of the kitchen. Cedar will also naturally silver in colour over time. If you are ok with a natural "weathered" look, then you can leave it untreated. If you'd like your kitchen to retain its colour, however, we recommend finishing it with an outdoor UV ray protectant or deck stain.

Will my mud kitchen/sensory table last outdoors?

Absolutely! Choosing the right species of wood for outdoor products is VERY IMPORTANT, which is why we have chosen to use 100% cedar. Choosing a wood such as untreated pine is not a great choice as it deteriorates quickly when exposed to the elements. Untreated cedar will last 15 years or more and is commonly used for outdoor furniture, decking, fences, etc. Once you receive your mud kitchen or sensory table from us, treating it with an outdoor UV ray protectant (such as deck stain or teak oil) will help it retain it's colour. Otherwise, you can expect it to silver in colour over time (though some prefer this "weathered" look!).

Cedar is one of the best woods for outdoor use and will hold up outside for years to come, but it naturally greys in colour over time. UV ray protection not only seals the wood but also prevents it from turning grey in colour. Note you will need to refinish your table every 1-2 years.
