How to print an object (STL file) in vase mode?

After placing an order, you'll have access to a downloadable ZIP folder with the 3MF and STL files of your vase mode 3D model. (1) From there, you'll open your slicer software (Cura, PrusaSlicer, etc.) (2) Import the 3D model into your slicer (note that it still looks like a solid model) (3) Dial in your 3D printer settings (nozzle diameter, layer height, layer width, print speed, bottom layers) (4) Now, look for the vase mode setting in your slicer ('Spiralize outer contour' in Cura or 'Spiral vase' PrusaSlicer). Sometimes, it's easiest to search for it. (5) Enable the vase-mode setting (6) Start slicing (with vase mode enabled, the slicer automatically generates the outer surface of the vase) (7) Start printing

What makes a 3D model designed for vase mode different?

In vase mode, you 3D print an object with a single outer wall and solid bottom (without a top, like a vase). It reduces the print time of most objects considerably. In addition, your 3D printer prints the object in one continuous path by gradually increasing its height, removing the z-seam from the object for a smooth finish. 3D models designed for vase mode are usually solid, which can be 'hollowed out' by enabling the vase mode setting in your slicer. I've imported the 3D model in my slicer and is isn't hollow. What do I do?

The 3D model is supposed to be solid (not hollow). This way, your slicer software 'knows' exactly what the outer wall is. To print the vase 3D model accordingly, you only have to enable vase mode in your slicer.

Vase Mode (also known as Spiral Vase Mode or Spiralize Outer Contour) is a slicer setting for your 3D printer that enables an object to be printed with only the outer perimeter/wall, just like a vase.

How to enable vase mode in Cura?

To enable vase mode in Cura, go to the 'experimental' tab and check the 'spiralize outer contours' box. In some cases, the vase mode setting is hidden in Cura, as it is considered an 'expert' setting. If you can't find the setting, all you have to do is search for 'Spiralize Outer Contours' and enable it. Or click on the hamburger menu next to the search bar > manage setting visibility > check the box of 'Spiralize Outer Contours.'

How to enable vase mode is PrusaSlicer?

Enabling vase mode in PrusaSlicer is easy. Go to the print settings tab > vertical shells > enable 'Spiral Vase.' A pop-up screen opens with the message that the slicer will adjust some settings automatically: The Spiral Vase mode requires: - one perimeter - no top solid layers - 0% fill density - no support material - Ensure vertical shell thickness enabled - Detect thin walls disabled

How to enable vase mode in Simplify3D?

If you are using Simplify3D and would like to enable vase mode, go to the 'layer' tab and check 'Single outline corkscrew printing mode (vase mode). After that, check if you have no top solid layers, infill density, and supports enabled. If not, you are ready to print!

How do I print with thicker walls in vase mode in order to get a strong vase?

If you want to 3D print a strong and sturdy vase, you have to increase your wall's extrusion thickness (also known as layer width). A general rule of thumb is that you can print 1.5 x the thickness of your nozzle diameter. For example, if you are using a 0.4 mm nozzle, the maximum (suggested) layer width would be 0.6 mm. If you want to print thicker walls than 0.6mm (which is recommended), I suggest swapping to a larger nozzle diameter. For example, 0.6mm or 0.8mm.
