Chaparral is an evergreen, low-growing, woody shrub flowering desert plant in the Zygophyllaceae family found in the southwestern U.S., Mexico, and Argentina. The plant has also earned the nickname gobernadora, which means “governess” in Spanish because it ensures its survival by drawing a greater share of available water away from neighboring plants. The whole plant has a characteristic odor of Creosote (tar), with an unpleasant taste.
Chaparral leaf contains several antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds, which makes the herb desirable for topical use against a wide range of skin conditions.
Chaparral le is not generally consumed internally because the taste is not well tolerated. It is often used to make oil or water-based infusions to produce mouth, and skin washes, lotions, and salves.
Powdered chaparral leaf is added to creams, salves, and other skin care preparations.
