This photograph was taken during a trip to Page, Arizona. I had always wanted to visit the slot canyons outside of Page. There are two, the Upper Antelope Canyon and the Lower Antelope Canyon. This was the first time I went there to photograph with one of my workshop students. You need a Navajo guide when visiting these two slot canyons. When we went to one of the guides and explained we were serious photographers and would be using a tripod for the camera to take photographs, he did not seem to be interested in working with us.

We then went to another guide and he said no problem. One of the spectacular features of the slot canyons is the incredible rock formations. The other is the light beams coming from above into the canyon. A good guide is very helpful finding both of these. When you are ready to take a photograph of a light beam like this one, our guide would toss the fine sand in the air at the sun beam to make it stand out. We were very fortunate to have found a great guide to help us get photographs like this.

If you have never been to a slot canyon, like Upper Antelope Canyon, it is beautiful site. The amazing shapes are formed by erosion from the water and debris that flowed through the canyon. Some times you can see a tree stump very high up that is stuck maybe 30 feet or more in the canyon. It is hard to believe how high the water gets during these times.
