This listing is for a lovely Italian midcentury modern Alvino Bagni drip glaze ceramic floor vase. This cylinder-shaped pottery vase was created in Italy by Bagni Ceramiche for the importer, Raymor, who was one of the signature importers of Bitossi, Bagni, and other Italian ceramic products to the US in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. I believe this beautiful piece was most likely made in the 1970's and appears to be made out of terracotta clay. The vase is similar to the orange version of Bagni's well known Sea Garden decor and has the same incised circles. It also has incised stripes around the lower middle part of the vase. The brown glazing appears to be raku fired and is somewhat iridescent in spots. It drips with bright orange glaze on the incised stripe design and on the circles at the top. The interior and base are glazed in a dark almost black shiny glaze. The bottom of the vase is marked with the stamped word "Italy" on the raised edge. This is a beautiful piece of Italian midcentury modern pottery by Bagni and will make a great addition to your MCM decor or Italian pottery collection.

Approximate dimensions: The vase weighs 5 pounds and 11 ounces and is approximately 5-1/2 inches in diameter and stands 14-1/4 inches tall.

Condition: It is in good used vintage condition consistent with age and use. There are a couple of very small fleabites or glaze flakes on the orange textured band and there is also some light shelf wear on the bottom. I noticed a 3-inch hairline running from the top to the first rim at the neck, but it is barely noticeable, and you have to look really hard to see it (see last photo).

*** NOTE: the image showing the vase on a table was AI generated using one of my photos. It is for demonstration purposes only. The other items shown in the photo are AI props and not included in the listing which is just for the vase. Please refer to dimensions above and photos of the vase for actual size and condition. ***

About the Maker:
Alvino Bagni (1919-2000), along with Aldo Londi (Bitossi) and Gambone, was one of best Italian ceramic designers of the 20th century. Bagni was taken under the wing of Londi in the early part of his career and he worked at Bitossi for a few years in Florence, Italy before opening his own studio, called Bagni Ceramiche, in 1956 in Lastra a Signa, on the outskirts of Florence. The vast majority of Bagni’s work was for the U.S. Market, and was imported by Raymor, as well as Rosenthal-Netter. Bagni did an array of widely different designs for Raymor, and because of that it can be hard to pinpoint his work since it can vary so greatly. Early pieces had a floral theme, pieces of the early 1950’s showed the influence of Aldo Londi, then later his work became very individualistic with styles and forms that really represent the best of Bagni’s work. His more modernist work using stripes, geometric patterns and bold lava type glazes became some of the more common themes of his work. An easy way to date Bagni’s work is the type of clay used, red clay was used from the late 1940s-1950s before a finer white clay came into use in the 1960’s. Even after the end of the Raymor era, which declined and disappeared in the 1980’s, Bagni was still designing and creating work for the American market. He made pieces for Anthropologie in the 1980’s, among other retailers, and signed his name on the bottom. His studio closed in 1992 and Bagni died eight years later.
