Pure silk has the unique ability to absorb up to 10-30% of its weight in water. The delicate fibers can act as a shock absorber for the drastic changes in humidity. Players have long credited silk for increased peg functionality, crack prevention and health upkeep of the instrument.
Unlike most of the violin bags that are available these are designed to go on the instrument with the lower bout in first. This keeps your hand on the neck for the entire time and minimizes potential damage from holding the violin in a way it’s not designed.
How to use:
While holding the violin by the neck with one hand, hold the bag open with the other. Hook one corner of the violin on the edge of the bag and pull the bag around the other side. Pull the bag up around the instrument while keeping your first hand on the neck. Let go of the neck and pull the bag up the rest of the way around the scroll. Pull the bag closed with the silk cord. (Wrap the silk cord around the neck to gather the material and make it easier to strap into your case)
Care: Hand wash or dry clean.
Each silk bag is handmade with 100% silk. Every material is tested for quality before being shipped. My handmade silk bags do not have any seams open on the inside or outside. The raw edges of the fabric are bound on the outside of the bag with a fabric covering. This prevents the common problem of having a serged edge (thread wrapped) on the inside which can catch the delicate edges of the instrument and actually cause damage. It also keeps the delicate seams from fraying and helps the bag last longer.
About me:
I worked as a professional seamstress before pursuing violin making. In my career as a luthier I have seen many weather related cracks, varnish wear from cases, and many other issues. Customers kept asking which silk bags I would recommend, and after being unable to find something I could wholeheartedly recommend I decided to start making them myself.
