Jean-Michel Basquiat began as a street artist in New York in the 1980’s, and first made his name under the graffiti tag “SAMO.” Basquiat catapulted to fast fame at the age of 20, and began a contemporary and close personal friend of Andy Warhol. Basquiat established himself as a cult figure of artistic social commentary, and a trailblazer in the mediation of graffiti and gallery art. Basquiat died in 1988 at the age of 28.

Book plates are page illustrations, pictures, or photographs, that are printed separately from the text of a book, but they are bound in during production. Pre-1960’s, bookplates had no writing or images on the reverse. In order to save money by the publishers, the majority of bookplates since the 1960’s have either writing on the bookplate, usually the title of the painting, and/or writing and images on the reverse. Due to the process used for plattings, bookplates retain the color, texture, and intensity of the original painting.
