Chicken of the Woods Mushroom Grow Bag (L. sulphureus)
FRUITING DIFFICULTY LEVEL: EXPERT (See below)
This listing is for an inoculated ready-to-fruit Chicken of the Woods Mushroom Grow Bag (L. sulphureus).
This item is recommended only for expert-growers and should be considered something of an experimental project. There is so far no known guaranteed or agreed-upon strategy for fruiting this species, and success seems to be somewhat unpredictable. So no instructions will be given beyond what is written below, and while this strain is known to fruit, we do not guarantee fruiting success.
For this species, fruiting THROUGH a filter patch seems integral to its life cycle. Therefore some people have had success allowing the mycelium to climb up to the filter patch in the sealed bag and fruit in that manner. This tends to produce small fruits, though, since there is no structure to support the fruit as it grows. A better method is to make a slit in the broad top-face of the bag and apply 2 layers of 3-inch micropore tape as shown in one of the item photos (tape is not provided, photo is illustrative only). This will simulate fruiting through the filter and provide more structural support for the fruit as it grows. The only additional tips we can provide is this species seems to prefer fruiting out in open air rather than a fruiting chamber due to either greater airflow, lower humidity, or possibly both.
If you have success, please share!
Bag weighs approximately 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) with substrate made from a blend of hardwood sawdust and soy bean hulls.
Grower is responsible for providing a suitable fruiting environment for the bag to flourish and due to the experimental nature of this item, success is not guaranteed.
Bag will arrive already-inoculated, guaranteed to be viable, and free of contamination.
Please note the following:
1. Due to an immense number of variables well-outside our control once the bag is in your hands (e.g. fruiting methods and environment), we cannot guarantee yield quantities.
2. Bag may arrive with in vitro fruits beginning to form; this is a normal sign of vigorous culture that is eager to fruit and will not significantly affect harvests.
3. Blocks may show signs of stress or cracking after shipping and should be left to rest for a few days before attempting to fruit. Any cracks will heal as the mycelium regrows.
4. Bags contain live mycelium that may experience great stress or die if they experience prolonged periods of extreme heat. So if you live in a climate where the bags are likely to be subjected to these conditions during transit or delivery, you may wish to consider ordering at a cooler time of year, or from a local vendor. We also reserve the right to cancel an order we believe is likely to not arrive in good condition.
5. "Ready to Fruit" is not a guarantee bag will arrive 100% colonized and able to fruit immediately upon arrival. It means that the bag is inoculated and needs no further action taken on your part to become fruitable, other than to wait for optimum colonization. A bag that is fruited freshly-colonized will perform better and more vigorously than one that's past its prime.
