A Magnificent And Rare Mid 20th Century Eastern Papua New Guinean Sepik Region Hand Carved Wooden Slit Gong.

This is a gorgeous genuine Papua New Guinean drum.
There are no questions at all when it comes to the wonderful age of this piece and I think my photographs speak for themselves.

This wooden solid drum is hand carved from a single piece of hardwood and is quite a genuine heavy Instrument with beautiful, wonderful age, obvious in its timely touched smooth worn patina.
These Slit Drums are known as a Garamut and were used by the Maramba people in the Eastern Sepik region of Blackwater in PNG and used traditionally in sacred ceremonies for festivals, or sing-sing- creating rhythmic music. There are other traditional meanings that may suggest that these pieces hold strong more sacred beliefs.
It is truly a glorious item and highly collectable and holds beautiful simplistic tribal carvings on the main drum structure and it has 2 beautiful flawless individual and intricate carved faces as the handles.
The only thing I could add as a flaw to this is it may be missing the gong.
Otherwise absolutely stunning perfection.
