Seller's description
and a courtier by necessity — and he spent a good part of his life writing about detachment from riches from one of his many luxurious villas. Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BC – 65 AD) is perhaps the most honest ancient philosopher about his own contradictions: he did not pretend to have overcome them, he examined them, named them, and continued to write.
Born in Cordoba to a family of the Roman elite, Seneca went to Rome where his oratorical brilliance earned him as many admirers as enemies. Exiled to Corsica by Emperor Claudius, he was recalled to become the tutor of the young Nero. For several years, he governed the Empire from the shadows with formidable political acumen—before Nero, having become a monster, ordered him to commit suicide after the discovery of a conspiracy. Seneca died with the serenity foretold throughout his work: slowly, by opening his wrists in his bath, dictating his last thoughts to his secretaries. A philosopher's death, in the truest sense of the word.
His work—the Letters to Lucilius, the Conversations, the tragedies—is disconcertingly modern. He writes about time management, death, friendship, anger, retirement, and old age with an acuity that makes it seem as if two thousand years haven't truly passed. His most famous phrase remains a complete program for life: "It's not that we lack time—it's that we waste too much of it."
