The Chinese Lantern, with its distinctive bright orange papery husks, is a visually striking plant that has long been cultivated for both its ornamental and culinary qualities. As these lanterns dry, they reveal delicious edible red berries inside. Known as Strawberry Groundcherry or Winter Cherry, the berries have a unique tart flavor reminiscent of citrus, complementing both sweet desserts and savory dishes. Beyond its culinary uses, the Chinese Lantern's dramatic appearance makes it a popular choice for dried flower arrangements and festive decorations.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Stratification is not required, but a short 14 day cold stratification can improve germination rates. After stratification, soak seeds 24 hours (floating seeds are fine), then sow seeds 1/16" deep, tamp down the soil and keep moist. Once seedlings emerge, provide full sun. Harden off and transplant into garden in full sun and rich soil when there are at least 2 true leaves.

Many factors influence the performance of seed such as temperature, light, water, weather, storage and the skill of the grower that are out of the control of Southern Seeds. In other words, a grower can cause high-germination rate, viable seed to fail. Nevertheless, we unconditionally guarantee all our seed for 30 days from the tracking verified delivery date and will accept returns on seeds for any reason for 30 days. We do not accept returns on seeds after 30 days from the tracking verified delivery date for any reason. Shipping fees on shipped packages will not be refunded.

We pride ourselves on getting orders out on the same day. The last pickup for our post office is 5pm ET and as long as the order is put in before noon, we will usually have your seeds out the door that day. Orders after noon will ship the next morning. Orders after close of business on Friday as well as orders on Saturday and Sunday will ship on Monday morning. There are times though like during peak growing seasons in the spring that our processing time may be longer. Please check our processing time on the listing for our current times.

All seeds will come in a small plastic baggy labeled with the seed name, number of seeds and a brief description of the growing instructions. That baggy is put into cardstock which adds to the protection. We have found that the number of seeds damaged in transit significantly reduced with this method versus wrapping it in foam paper and just putting it into an envelope like many sellers do.
